Our Process

Developing

We start with transferring your film onto a reel and loading it into our development tank.

Your photo starts to come to life as we pour in our developer and agitate the tank.

Next, we add in the stop bath to end the development process, once again agitating the tank to ensure full coverage.

Adding the fixer and agitating the tank again stabilizes your image and gives it resistance to light.

We next rinse the film thoroughly to remove any remaining chemicals.

Finally, we hang the film in Jordan’s shower, giving it a good steam to keep it from collecting any dust.

Scanning

We use a DSLR scanning process!

Placing your negatives in a 3D printed slide holder, it keeps the film flat and ready for its close up.

Under the negative is a lightbox that illuminates the image.

Next, our enlarging lens captures a photo of your negative.

Finally, we load your scans into Lightroom to adjust exposure, contrast, and color balance.

About

Mitten Film Development was founded by Jordan Skutar and Spencer Swenson in the Spring of 2024 with the passion to preserve the practice of analog film development. We love film because it requires patience, attention to detail, and dedication - all of which helps to make us better photographers. We’re excited to be a part of your film photography journey!
